It is an honour and privilege to take on the roll of Captain at MHGC. I am a long-standing member, with a strong family connection to the club.
My mother, Chick, was Ladies Captain in 1977 and was later made an honorary member.
Allan, my father, was captain in 1999, having been David Holyland’s Vice Captain for the club’s centenary. It is mainly with David’s help, forethought and generosity that we have the wonderfully matured back nine of today.
Dad was not only a very keen golfer, but he also ran the Junior section for many years, a member of which, Dan Thomas, now a very accomplished golfer, among other positive attributes has, I am delighted to say, agreed to be my Vice for the coming year.
Dad introduced me to golf at MHGC in the early 70’s as a junior, and I had a couple of lessons with the then Pro/Green keeper, Harry Granger. The club House was of a corrugated iron construction and only had 9 holes. Unfortunately, at that time, I didn’t take to golf, but took up squash instead which, being far less time consuming, better suited my later lifestyle, being self-employed. I re-joined MHGC in 1993 after retiring from competitive squash (a far less frustrating sport!). Hopefully my son, Freddie, a member for a number of years will keep up the family golf tradition.
I have had a very poor start to my Vice Captaincy, losing most of the golf season due to having had wrist surgery, and I apologise to Gary and the club for that.
Now back and trying to play! Upon my return, I have been delighted to observe the transformation that the new irrigation system has had on the course! I think this is probably the biggest single investment the club has made in a generation, and it is certainly paying dividends! We now have lush, sculpted approaches to the greens which, in themselves, are in the best condition I have ever seen, as well as watered tees. Congratulations to Lee, the greens team and the directors for getting the course, in my opinion, to the best ever condition and constantly improving. All sections of the golf are well supported, beginner groups, ladies, juniors, men and seniors.
We have a strong team of professionals headed by Kegan Jamieson, a very friendly atmosphere in the club house, a well-stocked bar and great catering headed by Adrian and Chris.
So, if you are looking to join a golf club that has a fantastic course with amazing country views, has competitive and great social sections, come and have a look at what we can offer, I can always help or point you in the right direction.
I will try to support all sections of the club and wish you all a healthy and successful up and coming season. Please introduce yourself to me if we haven’t already met.
Thank you, Mark Frith
