I joined Market Harborough Golf Club relatively recently in November 2021, to coincide with my early retirement. I started playing golf many years earlier at the ripe old age of 15, but when life became a bit too busy, I took 20 years away from the game, playing only once or twice a year, becoming more of a spectator of this lovely game. So as life eased a little, I was keen to renew my love for playing golf and I was warmly welcomed into the club by everyone I met, but particularly within the Seniors Section.
Living in the town, I had played the Market Harborough course a couple of times, so it was a natural choice for me to join the club, particularly with a couple of neighbours who were already members. Having only just turned 55, I decided to join the Seniors’ Section straight away as via the Seniors’ Social matches, this was also a great way to experience golf at many other courses in the area, at a very good rate, as well as a great way to meet new people. This coming season we have 18 Seniors’ Social matches, 9 home and 9 away.
I’m also often busy on weekends, so with most of the the Seniors’ competitions on Wednesdays and social matches on Thursdays or some Mondays, this fits well with my personal life balance.
Another key advantage that attracted me to Market Harborough Golf Club was the number of reciprocal arrangements that the Club have with other Golf Clubs, providing the ability to travel and play these other courses either for free or a nominal fee.
Whether moving from the Men’s Section to the Seniors, returning to golf after a break or starting golf later in life, the Seniors’ Section will welcome you with open arms. We have competitions for full (including 5-day) members as well as some competitions where flexi members are able to compete. Our PGA Professional, Kegan Jamieson and his team of coaches also run academies through the Winter for the Seniors (and other parts of the club), which is a great way of keeping the swing going through the colder months.
Whilst I am now retired from a career in financial services, my wife Jane still works, but slowly I am edging her closer to the golf course to take up this wonderful game!
Within the Seniors’ Section I am supported by a Steering Group of experienced and hardworking members who give their time to run a very successful and fun Seniors’ Section. When last year’s Seniors’ Captain, Earl Harrison asked me to be his Vice Captain and I was delighted to accept. I am already working with the Captains of the Men’s and Ladies’ Sections for 2024-25, Mark Frith and Stella Curran. Together with the Junior Section, Greenkeepers, Professional team, Bar, Catering and Admin teams we aim to ensure the best golf club member experience in the region.
